We get questions concerning performance modifications on a regular basis. Can anyone answer this question from a fellow AMG enthusiast? Misha asks:

Hi,

I have a 1984 Mercedes-Benz 190E AMG with an 2.0L 8v 4 cylinder engine and I'm thinking of changing the engine to a 2.3L 16V 4 Cylinder engine. I would just like to know if there was anything installed by AMG back in the mid 80's when my car was modified that would make the engine swap very difficult to do. I have been told that there was lots of sensors put on the car by AMG. Where can I find info on what modifications AMG did to my car? Thanks

Editor's Note: If you have an answer, please leave it in the comment section below.

It is hard to say what AMG mods were included during the 1980s. There is little documentation and Daimler obtained few records from AMG at the time of the acquisition (1990s). One place to check might be the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center. The techs at the center may have been involved with a restoration project for that model.

Classic Center – Irvine, CA Ph: 866-622-5277
When I visited the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center they had a large inventory of parts and they were in the process of restoring several vehicles. The staff is very helpful with respect to answering questions, finding parts and accessories.

Mercedes-Benz AMG Included in the Most Fun for $25k

Rarely does Mercedes-Benz AMG get mentioned when you're talking about having the most fun with a car priced at $25,000 or less. But in this Car & Driver video, the 1999 E55 makes the cut. Here's an excerpt of what they say on the video, which can be viewed below:

One hundred and eighty-three thousand. That’s how many miles have been rolled up on the odometer of the 1999 E55 AMG currently owned by Bryan English. English has driven the hell out of the big Benz, accruing all but 16,000 of those miles since purchasing the car in 2003. His E55 feels extremely tight and is in exceptional condition despite the high mileage, a testament to how well English takes care of his ride as well as to the Germans who built it. Squeaks and rattles are nonexistent, and the Mercedes dealers and independent specialists we’ve spoken with characterize the W210 E55 as bulletproof.

The AMG Mercedes-Benz E55 is the fifth car in the video:

AMG Market – The AMG Mercedes-Benz August 13 Weekly Update

It has been a quite week for AMG but there are still a few stories to ponder:

2007 R500Fast Moving Minivans Aren't Moving Off the Showroom Floors
According to MBUSA, the Mercedes-Benz R500 and the AMG R63 are on the endangered species list – only the strong survive. Mercedes-Benz is dropping both V-8 versions for model year 2008 as indicated on our home page, scroll down to "What's new for 2008."

Introduced last year with a price tag of $88,000, the 500 HP AMG R63 isn't moving well off of the showroom floors – wonder why? You guessed it. A minivan on steroids is a hard sell at that price. Competitors offer alternatives priced in the $50,000 and lower range. Expect to see V-6 versions of the R-class selling below $50,000 in 2008. Brief story here at Automotive News (requires subscription).

Show Car, an R500 you won't see the average soccer Mom driving anytime soon: Alpine Electronics of America, Inc. demonstrated their "RLS" show car at the 2007 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The car, which started life as a Mercedes Benz R500, was transformed into a show-stopping, elegant, rolling IMPRINT sound system demonstration. See pics at AllCarNews.com here.

The Most Dangerous Deal in America
If you like Wall Street reading, Daniel Roth's well written article in the Sept. 2007 issue of Conde Nast, Portfolio.com, provides a look inside the secretive world of Cerberus Capital—and why its plan to save Chrysler spooks Wall Street. Read about Cerberus Capital and their CEO, Stephen Feinberg. Here's an excerpt:

Stephen Feinberg currently sits on top of a collection of companies that employs roughly 250,000 people and generates annual revenue of more than $120 billion. If you added them all up, they would form the ninth-largest business in the U.S., with sales greater than those of Pfizer, Microsoft, and United Airlines combined. Feinberg runs multiple private equity and hedge funds under the Cerberus umbrella, and these have produced outsize returns, consistently beating the performance of rival funds.

Mercedes-Benz BLUETEC Initiative in Europe
E 300 BLUETEC Clean Diesel Technology
Stuttgart, Aug 10, 2007 (DaimlerChrysler news) – The inventor of BLUETEC technology is entering a new era with the new E 300 BLUETEC. On the back of positive experiences gained in the American market since the autumn of 2006, the environment-compatible BLUETEC diesel system is now also available in a passenger car model in the European market. Mercedes-Benz has achieved a massive reduction in emissions and compliance with the EU 5 standard whilst retaining the same favorable consumption figures.

2008 C-Class, Mercedes-BenzThe C Drive is Coming, A Mercedes-Benz Exclusive
MBUSA has launched a national initiative to promote the 2008 C-class. Invitations have been sent out for eleven events, which are being held nationwide during August, Sept. and October 2007. You can be among the first to experience the 2008 C-Class at "The C Drive" event, possibly in your area.

Guests of The C Drive are being invited to a unique, modern venue to take both variants of the 2008 C-Class — the C-Sport Sedan and the C-Luxury Sedan — for a spin on a street drive as well as a closed-course performance drive. During the event MBUSA will also provide a multimedia presentation demonstrating "all the ways the 2008 C-Class takes the Mercedes-Benz commitment to high style, performance, and technology to all-new levels." Plus, on-air talent from SIRIUS Satellite Radio will be on hand to provide the event soundtrack. More C Drive info here.

AMG Mercedes-Benz – Tomorrow

Late spring I wrote an article for The Star Magazine titled, "AMG Mercedes-Benz, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow." The Star is published by the Mercedes-Benz Club of America (MBCA). For those that don't get the magazine, here's a short excerpt concerning the "tomorrow" for AMG.

The following excerpt also includes information that I collected while researching that was not published. You can read the article in the July/August issue of the Star magazine (page 55).

More horsepower. Is it possible and do we even want more?
Its clear the engineers and designers of pre-merger AMG vehicles focused heavily on performance and increasing horsepower. This trend continues post-merger but the focus is slowly but surely changing.

I’ve encountered AMG enthusiasts claiming a "watering down" of the performance bias, while others view this shifting tide as a return to a more balanced automobile. However you view this mild debate it is apparent that we are approaching the horsepower limits for passenger cars. Due to the limitations associated with cooling an engine, the practical horsepower limit is widely believed to be in the range of 650 to 700 hp. Given we’re basically there, what’s next?

New decades create new customer demands and automobile manufacturers are paying attention.

“Sooner or later the market for high-performance vehicles will be saturated, as there’s only limited demand for 600 bhp cars,” explains Oliver Kurz, Head of Planning, Reporting and Order Management at Mercedes AMG. “These are the kind of trends we needed to consider in our planning processes.” (Quote from Cognos website).

Significantly more attention is being paid to creature comforts and cockpit controls. Instead of more horses under the hood expect to see more chips in the chassis. By the end of the decade, a third of a car's value will lie in its electronics and advanced technologies.

AMG competitor BMW is also heavily focused on technology and their advances have caught the eye of tech savvy PC Magazine, which awarded the BMW X5 the "Digital Drive Car of The Year." The criteria for PC Magazine's second annual Digital Drive Awards? They looked for cars with an expected baseline of technology – such as Bluetooth, navigation, parking sonar, stability control, and a full complement of safety features. Then they sought out the first implementations of technology that will be mainstream in two to five years.

Based on PC Magazine’s comments on the, ah, BMW, here’s a few things you can expect,

“Consider the tech package, for instance. The nav system employs a split-screen, transflective display that grows brighter in sunlight. The real-time traffic reports draw information from more than 600,000 other vehicles that automatically report their position and speed (rather than relying on copters, police sightings, and embedded sensors prone to failure). A back-up camera and front/rear sonar combine to provide a backing view – enhanced by Doppler-effect sound – that overlays warning bars (in green, yellow, and red) to indicate your proximity to hazards.”

They can rocket to the future, they can rocket to the moon…if they need anything they push a button and it's done. Sound familiar? Yes, the Jetsons will soon be comfortable in the cockpit of your car.

Last year I had the pleasure of attending an AMG talk given by former AMG Product Manager, Rob Allan. MBCA’s Greater Washington Section organized the event. It was a classic with Rob giving his presentation in the garage bay area at Euro Motorcars of Germantown – where else would a true car guy rather be?

During the presentation Rob touched on the improvements in transmission technology. If you haven’t done so already, kiss your stick shift goodbye. Like it or not machines now shift faster, smoother, and more intelligently than humans. Double down shifting? Not a problem. According to Rob Allan and other automotive aficionados, automatic transmissions are now “the world’s most intelligent transmissions.” The only thing the driver should reach for with his or her right hand is a coffee mug; assuming coffee isn’t dispensed out of the steering wheel in the future – maybe I should patent that idea? You can also expect to hear, “Mom, what’s a stick shift?”

Another resource pertaining to AMG’s future you should consider is the discussion groups published on the AMG Private Lounge. AMG owners have access to exclusive information such as the “Chat Sessions” held on the discussion boards. About once a month the AMG Product Manager from MBUSA, currently Mark Ramsey, hosts a discussion session where he answers questions from AMG Private Lounge members. The publishers prefer not to re-publish the question and answer sessions so you’ll need to visit the Lounge for details.

Performance still holds the prominent role in the AMG marketing campaigns. Consider, for example, the marketing copy for the SL 55 AMG, which reads, “An athlete among roadsters, the muscular, dynamic, tireless SL 55 AMG possesses strength and style.” The performance stats still come first, “With the 517 hp (380 kW) of the AMG 5.5-liter V8 Kompressor engine…” And the styling features still follow performance, “The AMG styling, retractable hardtop and attractive interior complete the look that complements its high performance.”

Will AMG reach the day when the high performance complements the styling? I doubt it but the trend appears to be heading in this direction.

No matter what direction our beloved AMG cars take in the future, one thing will always remain the same: AMG “high-styling” cars will be fun to drive and enthusiasts will drive them.
